Summer Card Q&A Why are people getting a $25 Summer Card* to get vaccinated? We want to help everyone get their safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine. Not only are all COVID-19 vaccines free, we’ll help pay for the time and transportation to get one—making vaccinations more affordable and convenient for everyone. North Carolina is beginning a pilot program in select counties where participating vaccine providers offer $25 Summer Cards* to those who get vaccinated with their first dose and to those who support them in getting vaccinated by driving them. The goal of the summer cash card program is to help people overcome the barriers of time, expense and transportation so anyone can get vaccinated and protect themselves and others from COVID-19. Who is eligible to receive a Summer Card*? Anyone 18 and over who gets their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine at a participating location OR who drives someone to get their first dose at a participating location starting May 26. Adult drivers can be given a Summer Card* for driving someone age 12+ to their vaccine appointment; only adults (age 18+) are eligible to receive the card. The pilot program at participating providers in Mecklenburg, Guilford, Rowan, and Rockingham County will continue through June 8. Summer Cards* are for drivers who are not otherwise being paid to provide transportation, such as taxi, Uber or Lyft drivers. Where do I go to get a Summer Card*? The Summer Cards* will be given at the vaccine event to those getting vaccinated or those driving people to their first dose after the vaccine is administered. Sites may offer a digital card or plastic card. You can find a participating vaccination site with information about when they are holding vaccine clinics at YourSpotYourShot.nc.gov. You can also call the Vaccine Help Center at 888-675-4567 for help finding a participating site. All/most participating providers are offering walk-in vaccines, and several also offer appointment scheduling online. How do I use the Summer Card*? The cards can be used at anywhere that Mastercard is accepted, both online and in stores. There is no activation fee to use either the digital or plastic card. Plastic cards have a sticker with a phone number or website to use for activation. Digital cards can be redeemed at www.myprepaidcenter.com/redeem. On the website, there is an option to receive a virtual card code to use online or request a plastic card to be mailed to you. If there are any issues utilizing either the plastic or digital cards, please contact the card call center at 888-371-2109. I am planning to drive multiple people to get their vaccine. Does that mean I will get multiple Summer Cards*? No. Drivers can get one Summer Card* per trip. I am an Uber (Lyft, taxi, etc.) driver. Can I get a Summer Card* for giving someone a ride to a participating vaccination site? Those who accept outside payment for giving someone a ride are not eligible for a Summer Card*. I am already vaccinated. Why can’t I get a Summer Card*? Adults who have already gotten their first COVID-19 vaccine dose can still get a $25 Summer Card* by supporting others to get vaccinated by driving someone to get their first dose at a participating vaccination site. We encourage you to think about who in your community you could reach out to about getting vaccinated–talk to them about COVID-19 vaccination, help them find their spot for a vaccine, and then drive them to their appointment. Why did you pick these counties for the pilot program? The pilot program will help the state gain experience in offering $25 Summer Cards* for vaccine recipients and drivers to help people overcome the barriers of time, expense, and transportation to get vaccinated. To quickly and efficiently gain experience and learn how to make the program most effective, the state picked counties around large population centers where more people would have the chance to get vaccinated with the Summer Card* offering. I don’t live near a vaccination site participating in the Summer Card* program. When will this program expand statewide? The Summer Card* program is being piloted in select counties. The experience during the pilot program will help the state determine how to increase the availability of the Summer Card* program. Summer Card is in the form of a Prepaid Mastercard.
