Health Insurance Options

If you have recently lost or can no longer afford your health insurance, or even if you are trying to purchase health insurance for the first time, you have options to make sure that you and your family have access to care.

Learn more about your options

Telehealth

Telehealth is the use of technology for health care appointments and services. It allows you to “see” your doctor without having to go to the doctor’s office.

Help for Buying Food

If you:

  • Already receive help buying food through Food and Nutrition Services (FNS), NCDHHS has received permission to enhance benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Learn more. Additionally, participants will be able to purchase groceries online using their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards at authorized online EBT retailers.
  • Have a total income that falls below the gross income limits for your household size, you may be eligible for help buying food through FNS. See if you're eligible.
  • Need immediate help buying food, call 2-1-1. Parents who need food assistance for their children can text FOODNC to 877-877 to locate nearby free meal sites. The texting service is also available in Spanish by texting COMIDA to 877-877.
  • Children who receive free or reduced lunch or attend a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) school will be automatically enrolled for a benefit of $257 per child through the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) Program.

Resources for Renters Facing Eviction

If you are a renter in North Carolina facing eviction due to COVID-19 economic impacts, there may be resources available to you. Review this fact sheet available in English and Spanish.

North Carolina has received approval from FEMA to provide sheltering alternatives, such as hotels, motels and dormitories, for North Carolinians with no other safe place to who need to quarantine or isolate in response to COVID-19 or are at high-risk for severe illness from COVID-19.

Medicaid and NC Health Choice

Individuals who are required to pay an enrollment fee for NC Health Choice or an enrollment fee and/or premium for Health Care for Workers with Disabilities (HCWD) will be exempt from this requirement until further notification.

Other waivers and potential program supplements are being explored at both the federal and state levels. Information will be provided as decisions are made.

Unemployment

The NC Division of Employment Security has information for people filing for unemployment.
